All these recipes can be made a few hours ahead, leaving you free to socialise with your guests.

# Wrap prosciutto around ripe melon pieces and secure with toothpicks.
# Toast slices of sourdough or ciabatta bread, spread with gorgonzola cheese and top with a thin ring of red onion. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and crack pepper over the top.
# Toss 34oz/100g whole almonds with 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tsp smoked paprika (pimentón). Season with salt and pepper. Fry on a low heat until golden (3–4 minutes)
# Cut a whole garlic head in half, drizzle with 1 tsp olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Wrap in foil and roast in a heated 200C/400F/ gas mark 6 oven for one hour. Serve with soft cheese and fresh bread to spread on.
# Buy large cooked prawns and skewer with a raw sugar snap pea pod or cube of cucumber. Serve with sweet chilli dipping sauce or sweet soy sauce.
