I brought this from Tesco as it was on offer from £8.00 down to £3.99. It was also one of the Tesco Finest range. This is a Sicilian wine which is "produced from vineyards personally selected by Diego Planeta, a celebrated wine producer from Sicily. The vineyards surround the historic town of Menfi in South West Sicily and benefit from the warm, Mediterranian climate."

The bottle describes as "A fruity blackberry and spiced-cherry red produced from vineyards in south west Sicily, made under the guidance of Diego Planeta, a celebrated Sicilian wine producer."

This tastes fruity and full bodied. Tesco have rated it "C" on their A-D scale, meaning it is full bodied, smooth and rich.

I think this is a nice wine, not too dry, and very flavourful. It is pretty potent - I have had 2 glasses and am pretty drunk Smile

I would recommend buying this wine at the reduced price (Tesco currently have up to 50% off of their wines), as it does taste pretty good. I am very particular about the wine I drink, and do not like anything which leaves my mouth feeling dry and leaving me thirsty. This has not had that effect, and I do think I will be looking for it again.

According to the label, this wine holds the silver prize for the 2007 International Wine Challenge.

Nero d'Avola is the most important red wine grape in Sicily and is one of Italy's most important indigenous varieties. It is named after Avola in the far south of Sicily, but now it spreads all over the island.
The wine produced with this grape was normally used to blend with other wines, including the well known Marsala, and only in the late '70s wineries started to bottle it alone.
The wine has a ruby red color with garnet red highligts.
Aroma blends of ripe fruid and spices, and the flavour is strong, round and very well balanced with soft tannins.
Alchool is pretty strong too.
Match perfectly with roasts and stews, as well as aged cheeses.
