I have always wondered what grits are as we don't have them here in the UK. There's a shop in the city centre near where i live called Lets Eat, and it iports American foods but they cost a fortune. I decided to invest in a box of Quaker Grits for just over £5(!!) but I dn't have a clue what to put with them. The box suggests to add grated cheese and bacon bits, but after adding a bit of cheese, it went all stringy and weird. The taste of the plain Grits was good, a bit like porridge (or Oatmeal for you Americans!). Does anyone have any suggestions of what i could put with the remaining 11 packets of Girts in the box to kep it a relatively low calorie but tasty please? _________________ Rain rain go away, come again another day |

You probably have instant grits Paula. In the south, grits are served with a little butter as a side dish with breakfast, instead of potatoes.
Saute some minced onion and add it to the grits as they cook along with the cheese, just keep stirring and the cheese will incorporate. You can pour the cooked grits in a buttered loaf pan and refrigerate until they have set. Then slice the grits and fry the slices in a little butter until slightly golden. Use this same method with plain grits and then top the hot slices with butter and syrup for breakfast. I like grits as a hot cereal as you said. You can use grits much like the Italians use polenta also and top them with a meat sauce or stewed beef with gravy.
Check out this link for some authentic southern grits recipes.
