Just as salt makes ice colder to freeze home made ice cream, adding a layer of rock salt to the ice in a cooler makes it a lot colder and can keep your food safer, longer. Make sure all your food items are well sealed to keep them from getting salty. This usually works best for short trips, or for highly perishable foods that will be cooked first. For longer trips dry ice can keep frozen food ,frozen for up to 5 days.

good tip. in the unusual even that england is hot enough for a picnic i will try that, it will be nicer than having warm sandwiches where the ice packs have metled and gone warm on the car trip to the beach!

Warm sandwiches are scarry. I had food poisoning once and was very seriously ill. Not an experience I ever want to repeat!
