Britain's National Trust launched a campaign Thursday to find the country's ugliest vegetable.

Gardeners were encouraged to submit anything "from two legged carrots to corkscrew runner beans, which often taste great but are rejected because of their looks."

The Trust, which looks after many of Britain's historic gardens, said it hoped the campaign would counter a trend among retailers for stocking perfect-looking fruit and vegetables, regardless of its taste.

Entrants have nearly a year to produce something ugly. The winners will be announced during British Food Fortnight in September next year.

I miss the little roadside fruit and vegetable stands that used to be all up and down Highway 5. Too bad people have gotten so demanding of perfect looking produce. It's often the lumpy apple that is the sweetest.

We still have some stands on the HW 156 from Latina to Frosinone.
Too bad they are very close to the big fruit market in Fondi (small town south of Latina) and someone who stopped by to get some fruit, found a sticker on a peach "product of Morocco" and sold as it was local LOL

Oops, well they got busted. I loved the big outdoor market we went to looking for limes that time. I'm going to start going to the farmers market in Carlsbad and checking out what they have.

we've never had roadside stands like that, we have the market in town and the farmers markets. the markets in town are cheaper but the fruit and veg doesnt last that long. the farmers markets are more expensive though so i just stick to the supermarket. but i allways make sure i buy British products to help support the farmers in the uk as they're a dying trade now unfortionately

The farmers markets are local growers and I love that. They always have to neatest goodies. I agree with buying from locals and keeping the economy going.
