Yesterday the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, and two Massachusetts parents, Sherri Carlson of Wakefield and Andrew Leong of Brookline announced it had filed a lawsuit against cereal maker Kellogg and the Nickelodeon television network. The lawsuit seeks to have the companies stop marketing junk food to children.
While I absolutely agree that there should be a limit on commercials for junk food, I think parents should do more.
The lawsuit is based on some questionable facts:
TV can't be turned off.
Parent have no control over what snack they buy
Kids cant go out and play
I can agree on the last one, if you live in a big town, but the other two statements are pretty weak.

There are truths on both sides as I see it. I agree that we need to stop brainwashing our kids with all the junk on TV. Heck our adults for that matter! But it's up to the parents in my opinion. Parents need to foster proper eating habits. My Nephew Tony and his wife Brenda are raising two healthy happy kids who eat balanced meals with ocassional treats. They play outside in the fresh air and sunshine. I'm sure they throw the occasional fit in the grocery store, what kid doesn't? That doesn't mean the parents have to give in.

| i agree with kate, if my daughter threw a tantrum in the middle of the shopping centre because she wanted crisps or some other kind of junk food she would spend the rest of the day in her bedroom and go without snacks (in my house snacks consist of grapes and raisens which she loves) for a week. i do agree that junk food ads should be banned on kids tv though, it only encourages them, and with britain becoming fatter, which leads to more and more health problems, which in turn leads to the national health service becoming poorer and poorer, they should be more sensible and figure this out for themseelves that its not a good idea. although parents can limit what their children eat, if the child has school dinners they can choose what they want and if they see chips (sorry, for you in the states, fries), chocolate and crisps (sorry again, for you in the states, chips) on tv all of the time then thats what they are gonna want to eat when they have their freedom of choice. the whole group, the media, parents and schools should learn to work together, ban fried foods in schools, parents get a clue, and tv bosses erm hello? what are you thinking?! |
