The fall tradition in southeastern Idaho of suspending public school classes to allow students to work in the potato harvest may be coming to an end.
The Snake River School District will hear a recommendation from a study committee at their meeting Wednesday to end the so called spud break.
The committee found that last fall, only about 250 of the district's 600 high school students actually worked in the potato
Fields during the two–week harvest break.
It also determined that few of the elementary and junior high students who also got the two weeks off worked in the harvest.
Snake River Schools Superintendent Russell Hammond says those families who do depend on students to help with harvest want to see the spud break remain on the school calendar. |
In my humble opinion, students should be "forced" two weeks in the fields..
In that way, they really will understand, that with no instruction, all they can do is harvesting potatoes, that is not really a light job... _________________ In vino veritas! |
