D.O.P. (P.D.O., Product Origin Designation) and I.G.P. (P.G.I., Protected Geographical Indication): two certifications at the European level which guarantee and protect the typical uniqueness of the best productions in the Italian tradition.
D.O.P.: Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.)
The D.O.P. certification protects and safeguards the provenance and origin of a product, in such a way that its characteristics are essentially or exclusively traced back to a specific geographic zone of origin. This can be in terms of natural factors (climate, environmental characteristics) as well as human factors (production techniques passed down over the years, artisanal production processes). Every production phase of D.O.P. products must happen within a specific and restricted geographical area while respecting a well defined traditional recipe.
I.G.P.: Protected Geographical Indication (P.G.I.)
This certification protects a product originating from a territory in which the quality, reputation, recipe and characteristics can be traced back to the geographic origin, provided that at least one phase of production is carried out in the defined area. Those who produce according to the D.O.P. and I.G.P. guidelines must follow meticulous regulations, and the respect of these is controlled by a third party in order to guarantee the rights of the consumer.
When you buy Italian products, like salami, prosciutto, wine, cheese, check for the certification on the label: It will guarantee that you are buying an original, high quality product.
