If your like me, you have things hiding in your vegetable bin.
When you buy too many green onions and the start to go bad. plant them!
I have a few in a pot on my balcony right now. Remove the dead yucky leaves and trim the top to about an inch. If you have a yard, find a spot that gets some sun and make a hole with your finger about half the length of the onion, than pop it in.Same goes for a large flower pot. Green onion tops can take the place of chives in a pinch, just use a little less because they have a stronger flavor. I step outside and snip one off for stir fries, a baked potato or to add to my salads. Sprouting garlic, or shallots? Seperate the cloves and any that are still fairly firm or have green sprouts, plant them. Right now is the perfect time for cold weather crops like onions and garlic in my area. I have a whole herb garden on my balcony, pots of parsley and rosemary, basil, chives, tucked in amongst my flowers. _________________ A closed mouth gathers no feet. |
