Introduction
This is a classic English short bread and it's delicious. The cookies melt in your mouth. At Christmas I make lots and decorate them with colored icing or dip them in chocolate. They can be cut to any shape but the number of cookies may change.
Ingredients

1 cup softened butter
1/2 cup granulated_sugar
1 medium egg
3 cups sifted flour
1 tsp baking_powder

Directions
Step: 1

Pre heat oven to 325F

Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in thr egg.
Sift together flour and baking powder. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture, stirring well to blend.
Knead dough lightly until it holds together.

Step: 2Roll dough on floured surface to 14" square. Cut into 49 (2") squares.
Use a metal spatula to lift each square and place about 2" apart on ungreased baking sheet. Prick each square with a fork.
Bake in 325 oven 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
Remove from baking sheets to cooling racks. Store in an air tight container.
