Introduction
This has always been my favorite sloppy joe recipe.I don't remember how I came up with it but I've been making it forever. For variety add a can of drained whole kernel corn or black olives. These sandwiches can be served burger style with sliced tomato and onions or open faced.
Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef or turkey
1 large onion , diced
3 Tbsp butter
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup brown_sugar , losely packed or to taste
1 Tablespoon cider_vinegar
1/8 tsp liquid_smoke (or to taste)
1/2 Teaspoon  onion_powder
1/2 Teaspoon  garlic_powder
Salt and black pepper to taste
6 large hamburger buns
6 slices cheese if desired

Directions
Step: 1In a deep skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.Add diced onion and saute until onion is translucent. Add the ground beef or turkey,  stirring to break up any really large pieces.
When meat is browned, add water, ketchup, vinegar and seasonings. Mix well and add brown sugar.Turn heat down to a simmer and cook until desired consistency, stirring often.  Season again with salt and pepper if needed.

Spoon meat mixture onto buns, top with cheese and enjoy!
