Butter Fig Bar Cookies

Introduction
I asked for this recipe after tasting them at a birthday party I took my  senior friend Elsie Hogue to. These bars are wonderful, buttery and rich.I didn't get the lady's name but I thank her for this delicious recipe.She writes "When figs are in season, you can make this filling and freeze it. "
Ingredients

Filling:
20 figs or enough to make 4 cups chopped
3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated_ sugar
1 tsp ground_cinnamon


Crust and topping
3/4 cup soft butter
1 cup brown_sugar
1 3/4 cups all_purpose_flour
1/2 tsp baking_soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup oatmeal
1 cup chopped nuts

Directions
Step: 1Wash, remove stems and chop figs. Combine figs, sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon in a large heavy bottomed sauce pan.Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer , stirring frequently until reduced to 2 cups.
Cool fruit mixture.
Step: 2

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F,
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Combine  flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and add to the creamed mixture.
Stir in oatmeal and nuts. Mix well.

Step: 3Press 1/2 of the crumb mixture in a 9x 13 inch  baking pan.
Spread fig mixture over crusts.
Sprinkle remaining  crumb mixture over the fruit mixture and gently press in.
Bake at 350 degrees - 20 to 25 minutes or until top crumbles are golden brown. Chill throughly before cutting into squares.
