Introduction

My sister Marjie has made Tamale Pie using  this recipe as long as I can remember. My Dad loved it.  It's a delicious and inexpensive entree , great for a chilly fall evening or tailgate parties.

Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef or turkey
1 large yellow onion , diced (about 1 1/4 cup)
1 cup diced green or red bell_pepper ( I preffer red)
 1 8 oz can tomato_sauce
1 8 oz can diced tomatos, undrained
1 small can diced green chilis (optional)
1 1/2 cups frozen corn kernels
1/2 cup sliced black_olives
1 Tbsp granulated_sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
3 tsps chili_powder
1 tsp onion_powder
1 tsp garlic_powder
5 Tbsps olive_oil

Topping
11/2 cups shredded cheddar_cheese
3/4 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups cold water
1 Tbsp butter

Directions
Step: 1

In a large heavy skillet, heat the olive oil. Add onion and bell pepper and cook until the onion is translucent. Add the ground beef or turkey and cook until no longer pink. Add the tomato sauce and canned tomatoes with the juice, and the seasonings, sugar and chili powder. Simmer 25 to 30 minutes until mixture is thickened.

Step: 2

While meat mixture is simmering, make the cornmeal topping. In a medium sized sauceoan combine water, cornmeal and salt. Place over medium high heat and cook, stirring often until mixture is thickened. Add butter and stir well.

Step: 3Add the olives ,corn and canned chilis if using and mix well.Pour mixture into a greased 9x9x2 inch baking dish. Top with cornmeal topping and bake at 375F for 40 minutes. Add the cheese the last 10 minutes of baking.

oh my god, this is delicious!! it was so filling and warming. this will definately become a regular in my house! i missed out the onions because i didnt have any (thought i did when i was doing my shopping), and i used tinned sweetcorn rather than frozen. the topping was crunchy and cheesy and it was just perfect!
