Introduction
This is what my Mom called an "old timey fruitcake" and it was often called a boiled fruitcake. This was my Grandmothers  recipe and it has been handed down and preserved through the years. It has raisins but no other candied fruit. It is a very dense, moist cake.
Ingredients
2 cups brown_sugar
2/3 cup lard or vegetable_shortening
2 cups boiling water
2 cups raisins
2 cups peach or pear preserves
Grated peel (zest) of 1 orange and 1 lemon
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp allspice

Combine all ingredients in a large pot, bring to a boil and cook for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
Directions
Step: 1Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool to luke warm.
Add:
4 cups all_purpose flour
1 package dates ( about 9 ounces)
2 tsp baking_powder
2 tsp baking_soda
2 cups chopped walnuts
Step: 2Mix well with a heavy wooden spoon.
Grease and flour a large tube pan. Spoon batter into the pan.
Bake at 325F for 1 hour.
