Introduction
This is truly comfort food , inexpensive, easy ,filling and delicious.
It's a typical Florentine dish and it's very famous in Italy by  the song, "Viva la pappa col pomodoro" from  "Gianburrasca" TV series with Rita Pavone.
As any other comfort food,  this is open to dozens of variations, but as far as I know , this is the simplest version.
However, the success of the dish depends heavily on the type of bread used.
Generally, avoid white sandwich ( fine textured soft ) bread, because the soup would be sticky..
Ingredients
1 Lb  ripe Roma tomatoes
2 garlic cloves
Basil leafs- 3 or 4 large leaves or to taste ( sliced)
Hot chili peppers flakes to taste
1 quart of beef broth
3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil  plus some more for serving.
3/4 lb of stale Italian rustic bread *

Rustic bread in Italy is made with whole wheat. A rustic white loaf can be used, or a nice baguette. The texture must be coarse.
Directions
Step: 1Puree tomatoes in a blender or food mill, removing seeds and skin.
Using a large pot, possibly earthenware, sauté garlic and pepper flakes in the oil. When the garlic is slightly browned, take it out.
Add the pureed tomatoes and the basil. Cook for a few minutes, then add thinly-sliced bread and stir  well.
Step: 2When the bread has absorbed the tomato sauce, add the boiling broth and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Let it boil for about 15 minutes, adding broth as needed.
Let it sit for about an hour, then stir well to completely dissolve the bread. Serve hot, but not boiling with a little drizzle of Tuscan extra virgin olive oil, some basil leaves,  and  grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano cheese
Step: 3Variations:
#1
Instead of garlic and red hot chili pepper,  you can make a "battuto" (finely diced celery, onion, garlic and carrot)
#2
For a more nutritional dish, you can add at the end of cooking one beaten egg for each serving.
