Review

My grandad sent me a £10 Argos voucher for Christmas, so after checking what small appliances Argos sell, I decided to buy a rice cooker. I noticed in their "January Sales" catalogue, Argos had a Cookworks RC-8R Rice Cooker at £9.99 down from £19.99, so I brought that one.

In the box, was the rice cooker, a plastic spatula, and a plastic measuring cup, along with the instructions. The instructions advised that for 2 cups of rice (I only needed a small amount because there are only 2 of us), I needed to add water to the level marked "2" on the removable pot inside. I did this, and placed this glass lid on top. When I plugged the cooker in, the orange light came on marked "warm." When I flicked the "on" switch, the red "on" light came on. After 15 minutes, the switch flicked off and the cooker held on warm. The instructions said to keep the lid on for a further 10 minutes so that the steam can continue cooking the rice (by the way, yes, I did end up with way too much rice for 2 people!!).

Upon serving, I noticed that the rice was cooked perfectly, but it was so sticky, it all stuck together! I managed to separate the rice easily enough, but when I cook rice in a saucepan myself, I never have that problem! I was a bit disappointed because i was expecting perfect, fluffy rice.

This rice cooker was easy to clean, and very light weight. At £9.99, I don't really feel like I can grumble much, but if I had paid full price, I would have been returning this. I expect rice to be cooked to perfection if it is made in a rice cooker, not sticky and starchy. I wouldn't recommend buying this model.

UPDATE! - I used this for the second time on Monday, and it broke! The cooker didn't switch off, resulting in everything burning and sticking to the pan. I exchanged it for the same product, hoping it was a one off fault. If it happens again, i'll let you know...

Paula, next time rinse the rice before adding to the pot. Rice cooked in a rice cooker generally is sticky. This is so it can be easily eaten with chop sticks. Use a short grain rice for better results.

I too have a Cookworks Rice Cooker and whilst I'm happy with the way it cooks the rice my problem is that the rice at the bottom sticks together a forms a hard sort of mat. At present I'm just removing the rice from the top and using that but it is most annoying. I am rising the rice before cooking. Has anyone else had this problem and solved it, if so I would love to hear from you, if not, I wouldn't buy it again. Also, does anyone have a contact for the manufacturer/distributor?

I talked with a japanese guy who lives here and he said to cook rice u must follow "the Geisha time"
They rinse rice for more than a hour before cooking it.
Now now.... a old pot with boiling water and a nice wooden spoon .....
I know I know... I'm too traditionalist ;-)
